An Introduction to Job Search Strategies
A Web-Based Seminar
Allen B. Richon and Merry Ambos
Molecular Solutions, Inc.
According to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for the US is at one of its highest points in recent history. Within the pharmaceutical industry, statistics show that the number of people employeed increased steadily for the period 1993 to 2007. While the total employment has declined since this time, a look at the Employment Sections of "Chemical & Engineering News" and "Science" highlights the fact that the industry is still looking for scientists. Locating a position that is "right for you" requires some advanced planning. Landing the position requires a mixture of skills which include scientific training, communication, and marketing. This seminar will look at the process of locating and securing a job as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry. The presentation is divided into four sections:
- Defining Your Goals
- Creating an Inventory of Your Skills
- Advancing to the Next Stage of Your Career
- Securing Your Next Position
Molecular Solutions is a recruiting and placement firm specializing in scientific professionals who work at the interface of pharmaceutical research and computers. This seminar is the result of our combined experiences working in the pharmaceutical industry and, during the past twelve years, as head hunters (aka Executive Recruiters). We hope that the seminar will assist you in managing your career. While this article has grown out of a series of presentations which we make at seminars for graduate students, we also have included some items of interest to seasoned scientists. Please let us know if you find these topics interesting and helpful. We would also appreciate suggestions for additional items that we have missed.
