Presenting Your Employment History

The final section of the resume contains your employment history, a list of publications and presentations, and other miscellaneous information such as appointments and memberships. It is not necessary to include the names of your references, however, avoid adding the line "References supplied on request" to your resume.

Employment History: List the positions that you have held in chronological order. Include the company name, location, dates of employment, and the position titles held. In cases where you have held multiple positions within the same company, list each position title (and optionally the dates in this position).

Professional Experience

Several resume books recommend that the experience listing include accomplishments within each organization. An example of this style is shown below. While either style can be effective, the format above allows you to concentrate the emphasis of the resume on accomplishments rather than on positions.

Publications: Begin the section with your thesis (masters or Ph.D.). For papers submitted to journals, it is generally a good idea to list publications in standard journal format. Avoid including papers that are "In Preparation" or that are listed as "Abstracts" as they give the appearance of padding and are generally ignored anyway. If articles have been submitted for publication, include the journal name. Publication lists that span several pages should be started on a new page rather than in the body of the main resume.
