Asian & Pacific Federation of Clinical Biochemistry (APFCB)
http://www.apfcb.org/index.htm
One important objective of the Asian & Pacific Federation of Clinical Biochemistry (APFCB) is to hold regular Asian-Pacific congresses to enable those providing a clinical biochemistry testing service and users of biochemical analyses to update knowledge on recent developments and advances, share expertise and experience, as well as discuss problems in their field of practice. Since the APFCB does not levy membership subscription, income from the organisation of the Asian-Pacific Congresses is also an important source of funds for the Federation to plan andorganise other activities.
- To disseminate knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical biochemistry.
- To protect and promote the interests of clinical biochemists.
- To do all such things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the foregoing objects.
The primary aim of the Association from its foundation has been to advance the practice of clinical biochemistry. This aim still underlies all our activities, which have been greatly expanded over the last thirty years by the incorporation of the Association, the expansion of its work to include professional as well as scientific activities and the provision of professional diplomas, available to clinical biochemists after appropriate examination. The membership of the Association (approximately 1,300) consists predominantly of individuals working in Clinical Biochemistry departments of hospitals, private laboratories and university departments. It also includes members working in related medical sciences such as Endocrinology, Immunology, Haematology and Physiology.

Phone: (703) 993-8385
http://www.geneticmedicine.org/
The rapid pace of genomic research affords the prospect of
improving human health and alleviating human suffering through
genetic medicine and research. In addition, the applications of this
new research will create important ethical, legal and social
issues.
Clearly there are many public policy, as well as scientific and
technological challenges, to be faced. These must be overcome in
order to ensure a supportive environment for the continued
advancement of genomic research and the development of genetic
medicine.
The Foundation for Genetic Medicine will strive to become a much
needed authoritative leader, a voice of reason and a catalyst for
progress. We will examine a host of issues such as those regarding
genetic medicine, behavioral genetics, and the ethical, legal, and
social features involved. We will help to develop and gain
acceptance, through education, for public policies which support and
advance genetic medicine for improved health care. Finally, we will
function to keep opinion leaders abreast of the most recent
scientific and social developments related to human genetics.

The International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) is a unique project that brings together the regulatory authorities of Europe, Japan and the United States and experts from the pharmaceutical industry in the three regions to discuss scientific and technical aspects of product registration. The purpose is to make recommendations on ways to achieve greater harmonisation in the interpretation and application of technical guidelines and requirements for product registration in order to reduce or obviate the need to duplicate the testing carried out during the research and development of new medicines. The objective of such harmonisation is a more economical use of human, animal and material resources, and the elimination of unnecessary delay in the global development and availability of new medicines whilst maintaining safeguards on quality, safety and efficacy, and regulatory obligations to protect public health.

For advice on the scientific issues that frequently pervade policy decisions, the nation's leaders often turn to the institution that was specially created for this purpose: the National Academy of Sciences and its sister organizations -- the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. The Academies and the Institute are honorary societies that elect new members to their ranks each year. The Institute of Medicine also conducts policy studies on health issues, but the bulk of the institution's science-policy and technical work is conducted by its operating arm, the National Research Council, created expressly for this purpose. These non-profit organizations provide a public service by working outside the framework of government to ensure independent advice on matters of science, technology, and medicine. They enlist committees of the nation's top scientists, engineers, and other experts -- all of whom volunteer their time to study specific concerns. The results of their deliberations have inspired some of America's most significant and lasting efforts to improve the health, education, and welfare of the population.
